So yea, I did this. Just so I could update since I haven't in a while. The squares are probably not the right size that the "MEME" suggests they should be but...who gives a shit? So here we go...my Top 10 current INSPIRATIONS!
Jamie Hewlett- I love everything this man does. Tank Girl, Monkey, Get the Freebies, but most importantly, Gorillaz. Both the artwork and the videos served as a huge inspiration to me growing as an artist. Just the fact that a project like Gorillaz exists, is popular and has an INSANELY original style is the best thing for my inspiration. Hewlett can make his art cartoony, realistic, detailed and simple while still maintaining his instantly recognizable style. Also almost everything he has his hands in becomes successful. His characters are iconic, his skill is beyond masterful, he is my artistic hero. His work is simply sunshine in a bag.
John K.- Another man, I admire infinitely. Ren and Stimpy is my all time favorite cartoon show. John's knowledge on animation is infinite and therefore he knows how to break the mold of regular cartoons to make something completely hilarious, fucked up, and even heart warming at times. C'mon, if you can make a Xmas episode about losing your first fart BUT make it emotional and almost tearjerking, then you're a master. And for a regular TV show to have SUPERB animation and acting is just astonishing and so inspiring to me. If Mr. Hewlett is my artist hero, then Mr. K is my animation hero, you eediot!
Maurice Sendak- What can I say about Where the Wild Things Are? The only children's book to tell the truth about kid's feelings? Beautiful illustrations? Cool-as-shit looking monsters? The book itself is so short, as are most kids books, but gives me so much feeling and sets such an atmosphere. Maybe its the nostalgia? I don't know, but whatever it is, its breathtaking. Sendak is a master artist, his illustrations are whimsical and charming. I love a lot of his other illustrated works as well, such as the original Little Bear books, but Wild Things…ya just can't top it. I hope to one day make something as memorable as Where the Wild Things Are. Its makes a wild rumpus in my heart!
*Sam-M - I really don't want to sound like a fanboy, but I've been following this deviant's page for a number of years. His art really packs a punch! His favorite subject matter is alternative girls, a subject I certainly enjoy myself! And he really has a knack for drawing females, I basically learned how to draw them from looking at his work. Another thing I love are his huge mile high sketch pages, in which each sketch is like a tiny master piece. I can tell he likes punk rock, surf and rockabilly music which are great musical genres that I really enjoy. His art is energetic, skillful and I can tell he has a blast when he draws, or atleast I think so. Well, I definitely have a blast looking at his work.
Bryan Lee O'Malley- Infamous indie comic artist of the Scott Pilgrim series. His style is very simple, but not flat, and really appealing to look at. He uses such simple techniques in a very extreme, epic way. His writing is also superb, his characters are so realistic and I could swear they were based off actual people I know. I always keep his writing in my mind when I think of a character's personality. O'Malley definitely wins this influence meme (to some extent).
T.S. Sullivant- The grandfather of cartooning himself! He pioneered the design of cartoony exaggerated animals. I love the old ink wood cut style, it brings such a sense of history to me and reminds me of how things used to be in the old days. Sullivant will always be in my mind when I draw animals and think of cartooning in general.
Classic Horror- My all time favorite subject matter. Monsters, ghosts, creepy things. I'm especially a fan of the old movies, the original Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman, Creature from the Black Lagoon etc. I love the movie posters that come attached and even the magazine paintings most famously done by Basil Gogos (whose image I used in this meme). To me these characters are timeless and sooo iconic. I could indulge myself in anything classic horror for hours on end. Even though most of these monsters may be from the dead, they make me feel more alive then ever.
Classic Disney- Walt Disney studios was without a doubt THE animation studio back in the day. Walt and his team were so innovative and flowing with new creative ideas, its almost impossible to believe some of those films were made back then. A couple of my favorites are the classic Mickey Mouse tons, Fantasia, Song of the South, Jungle Book, and even some of the newer films, but the old ones in my opinion are the best. This is heroin for an aspiring animation student. Pure magic, like all the labels say.
Fleischer Toons- Before Disney, the Fleischer studio was the big man of animation. Without them there probably wouldn't even be any Disney. But some of the stuff they did was just so insane and impossible for being so long ago. The Betty Boop cartoons are my absolute favorite, and Ms. Boop is one of my all time favorite cartoon characters. Sweeeet Bettyyyyy!
Bill Campbell- The man responsible for the illustrations of the famous Weird-Oh's model kits. They're just so crazy and the designs are awesome. The Weird-Oh's might also be linked to my interest in 1950's and 60's culture, especially the music. The insane, creepy and grotesque-ness of his designs are definitely a backbone for my influence and intrigue with the grotesque.
These are only some of my influences, mostly the main ones, but there are other ones I wanted to add. These are just the ones I'm into right now. Others include, Tara Billinger, Tim Burton, Dr. Seuss, Matthew Kirscht, Eric Powell, Looney Tunes and vintage Halloween items.
So yea. Adding this to scraps soon cuz meme's suck.
To be perfectly honest....for a while i really thought YOU ARE the guy who drew Ren and Stimpy, your style is equally as awesome as his work and maybe even better....and if i ever make MY influence map...be sure youre gonna be on it ^^.
I knew you were a MAD fan! That sucks. I don't subscribe, I buy it at the grocery store. Just got the latest one, although my dad stole it before I could finish it.
Keep up the awesome work.
Do you read MAD?
